LATAM IN GERMANY: meet Nelson Farfan Espada

LATAM in Germany is a new interview series and section, especially designed to highlight the EMERGE21 platform, both aiming to support Argentinian, Chilean, & overall LATAM founders and startups to strive their scaling into new markets, with a focus of having Hessen and Germany as an entrance point into Germany, Europe and the world.

Today, we bring to our virtual stage Nelson Farfan Espada , a Serial Creator/Builder of Leading Brands, Global Venture Development, Keynote Speaker, Lecturer with Fortune 100 DNA.

Dear Nelson, could you let our readers know what your roots are? Where are you actually from?

I come originally from La Paz, Bolivia and lived and went to college in the US, now home based in Frankfurt for many years. I worked many years in global leading roles being responsible for many world leading brands like Braun, Oral-B, Gillette, Procter & Gamble, Merz Pharmaceuticals and others, now I lead a Strategic Marketing and Venture development company based in Frankfurt and work with clients and partners in all continents.

What brought you to Frankfurt — Hessen?

When living in the US I was fascinated by the European Union and got my first job at Abbott in Wiesbaden.

What are you currently working on? Do you think our region is the perfect spot for you right now?

Ufff! So many things… Right now I’m working on the global launch of Brise Artificial Intelligence Air purification system under the new brand www.suvios.com, also in the pre-marketing phase of www.brainnavi.com a Brain Surgery Robotics company, some M&A mandates, preparation of a program to connect Frankfurt to Taiwan’s Startup Ecop system, and also the launch of my Strategic Framework “Why, Who, What, How” which keeps being pushed on the back burner.

Frankfurt is perfect because it’s basically the European hub where I can fly directly almost anywhere, it’s very international and it has an active and growing Start-up Ecosystem.

How much have you been involved in Innovation and Entrepreneurship locally and globally?

Innovation and thinking outside the box has always been my passion and drive, finding ways to achieve the objectives and beat competition. I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit since college but I started my life in a corporate world, maybe this was a reason for the success. I’m mainly involved in an international arena since building brands in my point of view can not be limited to a specific region.

As an Expat or Foreigner — how was your experience and things you overcame to be where you are today?

Being from Bolivia, or a different place I surely had a competitive disadvantage compared to locals, but for me I turned this into a competitive advantage because I naturally had a wider scope and I could see things from different angles. Within the years living in South America, US, Caribbean, Europe and long years going to Asia gave me a true international DNA. In addition being responsible for brands on a global scale in strategic goals it added to my experience and brought me to where I am today.

If you could mix the best of both worlds, what would be the top skills you would mix from both sides of the Ocean (LATAM and Germany)?

If I isolate only Latin America to Germany I would mix the German discipline, well thought through strategies, reliability and Latin American’s spirit, flexibility, chillness, and passion.

Can you share some tips or stories with other LATAM Founders that are about to take the leap to start business in Germany-Europe?

Do your homework! Sometimes emotions and gut feelings do not lead you to success. Prepare your venture well and you will succeed, as compared to just doing it and failing. When you come to Germany bring plenty of sunshine, be yourself, be confident, this is a great place.
